December 17, 2004Let the speculation begin. With just five days left before Derrick Williams, the No. 1 player in the country from Greenbelt (Md.) Eleanor Roosevelt, makes his announcement on national television, the guessing game has already begun as to what school he'll choose. Thursday's rumor was that Urban Meyer and Florida secured themselves a slot in his top three. Is this true?
"I was impressed with coach Meyer and what he had to say about how they'll use me in their offense," said the 6-foot-0, 189-pounder. "I don't really have a final three. I have three teams that I know I like a little better right now and you could say Florida is in there, but my family and I haven't really even started to narrow things down as far as strengths and weaknesses of each program."
And who are the other two schools in his current top three?
"I'm going to keep that between myself and my family, because it could change," he said. "I have a big decision to make and my support group will be family and friends and I hope everyone can respect that. The announcement will pretty much be the first time I indicate anything."
Williams said he was wary of a new coach at Florida at first, but Meyer won him over.
"He's a good guy and straight forward," he said. "He's coming in much later than everyone else and maybe I'm still fresh off his in-home visit, so everything needs to be taken in slowly. I'm heading to New York for the Ball Park National High School Player of the Year Award ceremony, so I'll be gone from Friday to Tuesday. That will give me some time to think about things.
"When I get back, my family and I will sit down and finish the process and then I'll let everyone know on TV Wednesday. It's going to be a tough decision. There isn't one school I can eliminate really, it'd be easier if I could. But all of them have something special to offer."
Williams will announce his decision live on ESPNews on Wednesday, Dec. 22 at 3:30PM EST from his high school. The five finalists for his services are (in order by visit date) Florida, Penn State, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Texas.
Derrick will break down what he likes about each school for Rivals early next week and we'll have plenty of inside info between now and his announcement.
