February 17, 2013FORT MYERS, Fla. | The top-ranked University of Alabama softball team swept two games at the FGCU/LaQuinta Inn and Suites Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Crimson Tide opened the day with a 2-0 win over Wichita State and then earned a nine-inning, walk-off, 2-1 win over Georgia Southern.
In the first game, Leslie Jury (2-0) had her finest outing of the season, allowing the one hit and issuing just one walk while striking out nine against Wichita State.
Freshman Haylie McCleney once again paced the Crimson Tide at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort, adding a run and three stolen bases.
McCleney started off the game with an infield single, promptly stole second and later scored on a Jackie Traina single.
Junior Kaila Hunt hit a solo home run on the first pitch she saw in the third inning to make it a 2-0 lead. It was her fourth homer of the young season.
In the second game, Alabama and Georgia Southern needed nine innings to sort things out as sophomore Danae Hays hit a walk-off, two-run double to down the Eagles, 2-1.
Traina (5-0) pitched the full nine innings to get the win. The All-American allowed one unearned run on five hits and struck out 14.
After Georgia Southern scored an unearned run to open the ninth inning, Alabama quickly responded, by loading the bases with no outs. Hays then smacked a double over the head of the left fielder to score McCleney and Hunt for the win.
It was the first extra-inning game for the Tide since UA knocked off Tennessee, 3-2, in 11 innings last season.
Senior Kayla Braud went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and a double. The Crimson Tide collected seven hits.
Alabama (9-0) will close out the tournament against Southern Illinois today.
