November 18, 2012TUSCALOOSA | Thanks to a pair of stunning upsets elsewhere in college football, the University of Alabama jumped two crucial places in the BCS standings this week to reach the coveted No. 2 position and a much clearer potential path to the BCS National Championship Game in Miami.
As expected, Notre Dame (11-0) rose to the No.1 spot in the BCS standings, followed by UA, Georgia at No. 3, Florida (4) and Oregon (5). Previously unbeaten Kansas State dropped to No. 6.
The BCS standings formula is a mix of computer input and human polls. Notre Dame has .997 BCS points, while Alabama (10-1) has .933.
Baylor's home upset of Kansas State coupled with Stanford's upset of Oregon created the shuffle that left undefeated Notre Dame at the top of the standings, and Alabama right behind at No. 2. BCS pundits believe if the Crimson Tide defeats Auburn and subsequently Georgia in the Southeastern Conference Championship Game that it will receive a bid to the title game for the third time in the last four seasons.
