July 21, 2012TUSCALOOSA | University of Alabama center Barrett Jones and quarterback AJ McCarron have been named to the preseason watch list for the Walter Camp Player of the Year award, released Friday.
Jones, the 2011 Outland Trophy winner, is also on the preseason watch lists for the Outland and Rimington trophies and for the Rotary Lombardi Award. A senior, Jones played primarily at left tackle on the Crimson Tide's 2011 national championship team and has played every position on the offensive line at some point in his career. He was a unanimous first-team All-America selection last season and won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy as the top offensive lineman in the Southeastern Conference as well as the ARA Sportsmanship Award and the Wuerffel Trophy for his community service.
McCarron, a junior, is also on the watch lists for the Maxwell and Davey O'Brien awards. He completed 66.8 percent of his passes last season in his first year as a starter, throwing for 2,634 yards with 16 touchdowns and five interceptions. He completed 23 of 34 passes for 234 yards to earn most valuable player honors in Alabama's victory over LSU in the BCS National Championship Game in New Orleans in January.
Other SEC players named to the watch list for the Walter Camp award were Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray, South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and running back Marcus Lattimore, Arkansas running back Knile Davis and quarterback Tyler Wilson, Florida defensive tackle Shariff Floyd, Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones and quarterback Aaron Murray, LSU defensive back Tyrann Mathieu and Missouri quarterback James Franklin.
