April 17, 2012TUSCALOOSA | Former University of Alabama basketball player Tony Mitchell will enter his name into the upcoming NBA Draft, according to a report from Yahoo Sports on Monday.
Mitchell averaged 13.1 points and 7.0 rebounds last season but was suspended Feb. 5 and did not play in the Crimson Tide's final 11 games of the season.
Alabama announced this month that Mitchell had been granted his release from the team.
Speaking at the team's postseason banquet last week, Alabama head coach Anthony Grant said he had met with Mitchell and that professional basketball was an option that the 6-foot-5 forward was considering.
Mitchell had one year of college eligibility remaining but would have had to sit out the 2012-13 season if he transferred to an NCAA Division I institution.
Mitchell was named the most valuable player of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off Tournament last November.
The Crimson Tide has three scholarships open for next season after the graduation of JaMychal Green and the departure of Mitchell and Charles Hankerson Jr., who announced he will transfer earlier this month.
