Your Guide to Media Days

The 27th annual Southeastern Conference Media Days event opens Wednesday in Hoover. The three-day event gathers each of 12 head football coaches in the league, plus three players from each team, for media interviews at the Wynfrey Hotel. A quick guide to understanding the event and how best to follow the action:

HOW IT WORKS
Each day, coaches and players from four of the league's 12 teams rotate through various rooms on the convention floor of the Wynfrey, meeting at designated times with radio, print, television and internet media. Typically, each of the three days includes at least one of the league's marquee programs. Today, SEC East defending champion South Carolina and perennial East contender Florida join Arkansas and Mississippi State. Defending national champion Auburn headlines Thursdays teams along with Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia. On Friday, Alabama, which has been in the SEC Championship game two of the past three years, anchors the final day along with LSU, Vanderbilt and Ole Miss.
Alabama's player representatives at the event include linebacker Dont'a Hightower, running back Trent Richardson and safety Mark Barron.

LOOK WHO'S TALKING
Along with coaches and players, a few other notable folks will be addressing the media over the next three days. SEC Commissioner Mike Slive will make his annual remarks, a "State of the League" address of sorts, at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. Given the off-field issues that have hung a cloud over the SEC in recent months, not the least of which was the recruitment of former AU quarterback Cam Newton, the Q&A session that follows Slive's prepared remarks will be a can't-miss moment. ... New SEC Coordinator of Football Officials Steve Shaw will speak at 8:15 a.m. Thursday on new rules and other such topics. Shaw replaces longtime SEC officials coordinator Rogers Redding beginning this year. ... The media itself wouldn't be caught on the wrong side of the microphone, but will speak with its votes in picking its All-SEC preseason team, a predicted order of finish in each division, and an SEC champion. Results of the voting will be released Friday. ... SEC Insider Eric SanInocencio will be conducting a live chat at secsports.com each day, including at 12:45 p.m. Wednesday.
