June 6, 2011TUSCALOOSA | Another transfer has departed the University of Alabama football program in Petey Smith. Smith is a linebacker who signed with the Crimson Tide in 2009, and will now attend Holmes Community College in Goodman, Miss.
Smith had yet to see action for Alabama, having redshirted in 2010. Efforts to reach Smith were unsuccessful.
"We're very excited to have an older player come in, someone who has been exposed to what Petey has in terms of competition," Koonz said. "He was a member of one of the best linebacking corps in the country, and it was sort of stockpiled in front of him. He wants to play, and he'll have every chance for that here."
Smith (6-foot-1, 260 pounds) initially signed with the Crimson Tide out of Seffner (Fla.) Armwood High as a Rivals.com three-star recruit. He grayshirted in 2009, deferring his enrollment at UA until January of 2010. Because he redshirted at Alabama, Smith still has four years of college eligibility remaining, with presumably one or two of those playing for Koonz at Holmes.
"He's got the mass needed to plug the middle, and he's an excellent blitzer," Koonz added. "Now, is he ready to get into pass drops at 260 pounds? That's something we'll have to wait and see with. If he gets too big, we'll move him up closer to the line, but that's not the plan. He's ready to get to work and we're excited to have him."
Without Smith, UA now has six scholarship inside linebackers: Dont'a Hightower, C.J. Mosley, Nico Johnson, Chris Jordan, Trey DePriest and Tana Patrick.
Smith is one of several players to have left the Crimson Tide since the end of the 2010 season, including defensive back B.J. Scott, defensive lineman Brandon Moore and running back Demetrius Goode. Scott and Goode transferred to South Alabama and North Alabama, respectively, while Moore is expected to play this fall at East Mississippi Community College.
