4-star Martin undecided about weekend visit
Carlton Martin has a decision to make.
No, not that decision. The Rivals.com four-star defensive tackle from Madison, Miss., will get around to choosing a college at some point, but this decision is a little less significant. Martin's trying to decide what school to visit unofficially this weekend.
Martin's teammate, Bryon Bennett, has decided on Ole Miss with the Rebels hosting LSU for his action Saturday, but Martin is contemplating heading south instead of north and taking in Southern Mississippi's home finale against Tulsa.
It would be a rare trip for Martin to USM this season, while he has been a fixture in Oxford, Miss., including staying with a friend in town after the Rebels' 42-17 win over Tennessee last Saturday.
"I'm just not sure yet about this weekend," Martin said. "Ole Miss is going to be a cool place to be, but I've thought about catching one at Southern Miss. I've spent a lot of time at Ole Miss so I may switch it up. I just haven't decided."
Two weeks ago, Martin was planning on being in Lubbock, Texas, Saturday for an official visit to Texas Tech, but an early kickoff against Oklahoma and the Jaguars' playoff game against Olive Branch Friday night has that trip on hold.
"Those out-of-state trips will come in December or the first of January," Martin said. "The time isn't good right now, but I'll get to them."
When asked how many schools he could see himself playing at, Martin listed Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Southern Miss, Michigan State, Texas Tech and Baylor. With five official visits remaining, at least one decision will have to be made.
Martin is considering not taking an official visit to one of the Magnolia State schools.
"Of course I'll want to take officials to the Big XII and Big Ten schools because they are far away," Martin said. "The other ones I just don't know yet. It'll depend if I can cut the group I want to see or if I know enough about someone so an official visit won't make a difference.
"But the schools I haven't visited, all the coaches have talked to me and been very nice. I want to give it a look. There's no reason not to."
Madison Central's game against Olive Branch puts together what is arguably Mississippi's best defensive line against the state's best offensive line. Martin and Bennett will try to win the line of scrimmage against an offensive unit led by the Conquistadors' Damien Robinson and Shon Coleman.
"I just know they have a really good line, and we have to be ready," Martin said. "I think we'll take it, but they are a team you have to respect. Olive Branch and South Panola have the best lines and it looks like we'll see them in back-to-back weeks."
Rivals.com rates Martin as the No. 24 defensive tackle nationally and the No. 8 overall player in Mississippi.
