NU Notes: More young faces expected to play
Every week it seems like a popular question for Nebraska head coach Bill Callahan revolves around playing more young faces on offense and defense.
Following Thursday's practice, Callahan said several young players got extra work this week, so don't be surprised if you see them on the field Saturday against Texas A&M.
"I know we've given more reps to Rickey Thenarse and Eric Hagg quite a bit at safety," Callahan said. "Inside the young linebackers, most likely Blake Lawrence would fit into the equation. At corner, we've looked at Anthony Blue quite a bit, as he's getting more time as well. That's just a few guys to talk about. In terms of defensive linemen, we don't have anybody we are bringing up or looking at this time."
In last week's Oklahoma State game, Callahan also played freshmen running backs Quentin Castille and Roy Helu quite a bit. On Thursday, Callahan said don't be surprised if freshman Marcus Mendoza joins the rotation as well.
"I had a conversation with a couple guys about their playing time," Callahan said. "I don't know if you remember when we started training camp, we talked about the young freshman players and how we were going to develop them and bring them along so that when this stretch run hits, they'll be able to contribute."
