First half all wrong for Tennessee
After enduring the bedlam of Eugene, Ore., earlier this season against second-ranked Oregon, first-year Tennessee head coach Butch Jones had to lead his Volunteers into Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday afternoon to face top-ranked Alabama.
But any faint hopes of a stunning upset ended amid a Crimson tidal wave as one of the Deep South's most historic rivalries continued to be a one-sided affair after Alabama pounded Tennessee, 45-10.
The scent of victory cigars could be detected in the postgame air as the Volunteers walked off the field still trying to sort through the confluence of events that led to a 35-point halftime deficit.
