ATLANTA - It is not about the size of the dog in the fight, it is about the size of the fight in the dog.
Yes, this is a time-honored sports cliche, but Walton running back Tyren Jones perfectly embodies its meaning.
After a season where the star junior rushed 319 times for 2,375 yards and 34 touchdowns, it is easy to forget that Jones is only 5-foot-8, 180 pounds.
What Jones is lacking in size, he makes up for in work ethic and desire to compete, and he has been given a chance to face off against some of the biggest and best juniors in the state of Georgia at the Rising Seniors Bowl.
"I just love to play and compete," he said. "Being here and competing against these guys is big. I know it will make me better."
The Marietta native has offers from Georgia, Duke, Oklahoma State, and Vanderbilt before the end of his senior season, but one of those offers stands out a little more than the rest.
"I am glad I got the offer from Georgia," said Jones. "They are the in state school, and this is home for me, so I was glad to get the offer from Georgia. They had a really good year and did some good things. So I was happy to get it."
Jones led the Raiders to a 14-1 record and a birth in the AAAAA State title game.
Unfortunately, for the star running back, their only loss came against Grayson in that title game in the Georgia Dome.
Despite its perfect season being spoiled by the bitter loss, Jones believes Walton's best football could be ahead of them.
"Brandon (Kublanow) and I talked about it and we really just want to get back to work so we can do it again," said Jones. "We know if we work hard, we can do some good things, so that is our plan at this point."
Jones is sure to garner much more attention as the recruiting process carries on, but he has yet to nail down a timeline for a commitment.
"I might want to commit in the spring or summer, but I'm just not sure yet," said Jones. "I just want to focus on being a better player, really."
